I have lost count of how many couples I have counseled who thinks their problem is unique. Sometimes the specifics are unique, but the underlying issues are never new.
And some issues are present in every marital dispute. No spouse ever started a marriage counseling session with this line: “Let me tell you where I am wrong.”
With a 50% divorce rate you would think half the divorced population would say: “I’m the jerk!” OK, but aren’t there at least 10% of the jerks who are honest? Why are there no guy’s sitting in a bar saying, “Yep, that’s me she’s talking about.” Pointing to his wife on Oprah, as she displays a copy of her book: “My life married to an idiot.”
So let me give you a piece of eternal marital advice, if you have no idea what you are doing wrong in your marriage, you probably are.
