The Real Glass Ceiling
If you are reading this email on a computer while sipping a Starbucks special latte, then you are well within the top 1% luckiest people on this planet.
There are places on this planet where one in four women still die in child birth. There are places on this planet where the courts uphold a man’s “right” to beat his wife. There are place on this planet where women are forbidden to read emails like this.
Just in terms of the standard of living, the gap between you and 80% of the women on this planet is so great, that they all truly believe, if they had your lifestyle, they would be in constant bliss.
So why aren’t you?
Oscar Wilde said it beautifully, “There are two tragedies in life. One is not to get your heart’s desire. The other is to get it.”
What more out of life could we possible ask for that is more significant than all we have?
Consider the poverty, constant wars, harsh living, disease and lack of hygene, to mention just a few of the constant issues we don’t have to really deal with, that was the plague of humanity through most of it’s existence. Relative to all who have come previously, haven’t we achieved a standard of living extremely close to the epitome of existence?
And yet we aren’t jumping up and down or singing the praises of existence in the 21st century, why?
Because when all is said and done, all this, as amazing as it all is, is just a means, a vital means, but a means nevertheless.
By way of example, it’s like having all the ingredients but no knowledge of how to bake a cake. It’s like owning your own private jet, but not knowing where to go.
We, more than any other group of people in the history of the world have all the time and luxury to make our marriages a deliciously wonderful joy. King Solomon himself proclaimed the joy of connecting with your beloved is not to be compared with any other pleasure of this world.
We have the ingredients, you, your husband, and plenty of time to talk. Our jobs don’t involve immense physical labor, and our homes don’t require inordinate amounts of toil to maintain. It’s as though we can see the ecstasy, we even watch movies describing what our marriages should look like, yet a glass ceiling keeps us on this side of sublime euphoria.
I believe that in times gone by, they had the knowledge of love but not the time, today we have the time but somehow lost the knowledge.
